GPCR Practical course 2013
April 15-19th 2013
Oulu, Finland
A five-day practical course organized by Dr. Veli-Pekka Jaakola (Biocenter Oulu) and Dr. Henri Xhaard (University of Helsinki, Faculty of Pharmacy, Centre for Drug Research) including 8 hours of lectures and 16 h of practical sessions.
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) represent the largest family of receptors in the human genome, with more than 800 members. GPCRs are key drug targets, and recent estimates suggest that between 30-60% of the drugs currently on the market target members of the GPCR family either directly or indirectly. The last decade has seen several three-dimensional structures of GPCRs solved at atomic resolution, but also a better understanding into the complexity of their signaling pathways.
This course is intended for graduate students and academic/industry professionals interested in GPCRs. It aims to provide a thorough understanding of experimental and computational techniques used in GPCR research, reinforced through hands-on practical learning. In particular, the course covers primary and secondary binding assays, biophysical characterization, and molecular modeling.
